When the Donohoe family began a search to learn about their family’s history, they uncovered more questions than answers. Their ancestors had emigrated from Ireland during the Famine, and settled first in Ontario, Canada. After some time, a several family members moved to the Finger Lakes region of New York. Working on the family’s genealogy was like trying to complete a large puzzle and discovering that there were important pieces missing.
What they began to understand was that there were secrets that had been kept up until recent times. It all seemed to be so improbable. They knew that a great uncle, Paddy O’Neil, had returned to Ireland on a couple of occasions beginning in the 1860’s.
What they learn is what the family had tried to hide. They learn, as well, that keeping family secrets comes at a cost. An emotional toll is paid. Persistence and resilience will lead to healing.
In the end, it is love that endures.
